Request to non-Japanese participants
The 53rd annual meeting of the ESJ and the EAFES2 can win a grant if the number of foreign participants satisfies a criterion. Participants who have citizenship of countries other than Japan including international students are solicited to inform us of their nationality when they register for the meeting at the web site.

You can give an oral or poster presentation at each of the two conferences, the 2nd EAFES Congress and the 53rd Annual Meeting of the ESJ. For presentation at the 2nd EAFES congress, application is necessary at http://www.esj.ne.jp/eafes2006/. Be sure that the presentation at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the ESJ has the title and content different from that at the 2nd EAFES Congress.

Scientific Program

Condition for the contribution
The organizers and contributors at symposia and oral or poster sessions must have the Class-A or B membership of the ESJ, and are required to register for the participation in the meeting. Class-C Members are not allowed to propose symposia nor contribute papers. Organizing Committee will check if the symposium organizers and contributors meet this condition or not. You can apply ESJ membership in advance of your proposal for symposia and presentations, if you do not have required membership. However, Organizing Committee may invite some symposium presenters who do not have the membership, if the symposia have sufficient reasons for invitation. Symposium organizers who want to invite such scientists should explain the reason in their proposals for symposia sent to the organizing committee (jes53@agr.niigata-u.ac.jp). Those who apply ESJ membership should contact the ESJ office. See the following website for details: http://www.esj.ne.jp/esj/E_Member.html#E_MembershipTop

Symposia
We invite proposals for symposia on the entire range of topics in Ecology. If you hope to organize a symposium, please send your proposal by e-mail to the Organizing Committee (jes53@agr.niigata-u.ac.jp). The proposal should include the following information: the name(s) of organizer(s), the title and abstract (less than 200 words) of the symposium, the names, affiliations, and tentative presentation titles of potential presenters, expected number of audiences and the official language in the symposium. The deadline of symposium proposal is October 7, 2005 (Fri.).

For the efficient allocation of limited space and time to symposia, the Program Committee will make the decision to accept or decline the proposal. The committee may advise the organizers to integrate a few symposia including these at the EAFES2 into one symposium. The decision will be sent to the organizers by November 11, 2005 (Fri.) by e-mail.

Since this meeting is jointly held with the EAFES2, sessions and presentations in English are highly welcome.

Each symposium will be 2.5 hours. Session rooms are equipped only with an LCD projector (true XGA, resolution 1024 x 768) and a Personal Computer with Windows XP. No overhead projector and slide projector are available. See the section "Preparing your presentation" below for details.

Each presenter should submit an abstract online via the website at http://www.esj.ne.jp/meeting/53/ from 1:00 pm on December 12, 2005 (Mon.) until January 11, 2006 (Wed.).

Notice the following instruction when you propose a symposium.

1. You can organize no more than one symposium. An organizer and presenter of a symposium should not give a presentation at another symposium and contributed oral sessions. Poster sessions and workshops are open to them.

2. An organizer and presenter of a symposium at the EAFES2 could potentially be inhibited to organize a symposium and give a presentation at a symposium at the 53rd annual Meeting of the ESJ.

3. You can act as a commentator at multiple symposia including these at the EAFES2. But it is not our recommendation, because there is every possibility that you will have to appear as a presenter or commentator at multiple symposia at the same period of time. It is almost impossible for us to coordinate the program so as to avoid such situations.

4. If an organizer plans to include non-member presenters, please include a full explanation of the necessity for doing so in the proposal.

Oral and Poster Sessions
We invite applications for an oral or poster presentation on every aspect of ecology. You can give a presentation at each of the two conferences, the 53rd Annual Meeting of the ESJ and the EAFES2. However, an organizer and presenter of a symposium can not give an oral presentation at general contributed sessions. Poster sessions are open to them.

If you hope to give an oral or poster presentation, please send an application via the official website (http://www.esj.ne.jp/committee/jes53reg/e_index.html) by November 18th, 2005 (Fri.).

The following information is necessary: the title, the name(s) and affiliation(s) of presenter(s), choice of oral or poster presentation, preferred sections (listed below) up to three, whether you are planning to give a presentation at the EAFES2, whether you hope to be an applicant for the Poster prize. The poster prize is intended to encourage young scientists who have contributed to every aspect of ecology. Those who regard themselves as young can apply for the prize. Detailed information will be availabe on this site later.

If you cannot access the web site, please send the above information to the organizing committee by e-mail or facsimile along with the information necessary for registration.

Because of limited space and time, we may ask you to change presentation styles (oral or poster) and the section classifications. For encouraging young scientists, we offer a Poster Prize (See the details at the official website, http://www.esj.ne.jp/meeting/53/).

Since this meeting is jointly held with the EAFES2, a presentation in English is welcome. However, English presentations might be integrated into a session, regardless of the section classification, if they are so limited in number.

Each presentation at the contributed oral sessions should be 15 minutes long (12 minutes for presentation followed by a 3- minute question and answer). Sounds of a bell will inform you of elapsed times from the start of your presentation; first at 10, second at 12 and finally at 14.5 minutes,

Session rooms are equipped only with an LCD projector (true XGA, resolution 1024 x 768) and a Personal Computer with Windows XP. No overhead projector and slide projector are available. See the section "Preparing your presentation" below for details.

Each poster will be mounted on a 120cm width by 180cm high poster board.

Sections at contributed oral and poster sessions (choose up to 3)
1.Vegetation, 2.Plant Populations, 3.Plant Ecophysiology, 4.Plant Reproduction, 5.Plant Life History, 6.Pollination, 7.Seed Dispersal, 8.Fungi, 9.Microorganisms, 10.Landscape Ecology, 11.Successsion / Regeneration, 12.Phenology, 13.Evolution, 14.Biodiversity, 15.Theoretical Ecology, 16.Animal Communities, 17.Animal Populations, 18.Animal Reproduction, 19.Animal Life History, 20.Animal Behavior, 21.Social Ecology, 22.Molecular Ecology, 23.Palaeoecology, 24.Conservation, 25.Ecosystem Management, 26.Invasive Species, 27.Urban Ecology, 28.Dry Matter Production, 29.Biogeochemical Cycles, 30.Others

Workshops
We invite proposals of informal workshops. They are planned in the evenings of March 24th (Fri.), 25th (Sat.) and 27th (Mon.) and in the afternoon of March 28th (Tue.). Each workshop will be 2 hours. If you hope to organize a workshop, please send by e-mail the following information to the Organizing Committee (jes53@agr.niigata-u.ac.jp): the name(s) of organizer(s), the title and abstract (less than 200 words) of the symposium, the names and affiliations of potential presenters, expected number of audiences and the official language in the symposium. The deadline of workshop proposal is November 18, 2005 (Fri.).

Because of limited space and time for the meeting, we may be forced to decline your proposal. The decision will be sent to the organizers by December 2, 2005 (Fri.) by e-mail.

Session rooms are equipped only with an LCD projector (true XGA, resolution 1024 x 768) and a Personal Computer with Windows XP. No overhead projector and slide projector are available. See the section "Preparing your presentation" below for details.
