☑懇親会の当日参加受付は、3月15日午後より会場内の受付カウンターでお願いします。なお、定員に達した時点で受け付けを終了します。

注意：大会参加費と懇親会参加費は、できるだけ同時に申し込むようにして下さい。お支払い後に変更が生じた場合は、問い合わせページから連絡をお願いします。ただし、受付システムの都合上、キャンセルや追加の申込みには手数料がかかる場合があるのでご了承ください。

• 日本生態学会の会員手続きにおいて「定収入のない若手会員」の参加費、懇親会費は「学生」として扱えるよう準備していますので、「定収入のない若手会員（2018年）」と認められた方はその旨を明記して大会参加申込をしてください。
• 懇親会の目的は、日頃は接する機会が少ない研究者どうしが気楽な空気のなかで交流を図ることにあります。とりわけ学生には、異なる研究分野や機関の研究者・学生と出会い、研究の幅を広げる機会として、重要な役割を果たしてきました。今大会の懇親会でも、学生の会費を低めにしておりますので、一般・学生ともに多くの皆さまにご参加いただき、有意義で楽しい交流の場として懇親会をご活用いただければ幸いです。
• 大会参加費については 2018 年 1 月 31 日（水）取消分まで、懇親会費については 2018 年 2 月 9 日（金）取消分まで全額を返金します（振込手数料等の経費は除く）。それ以降は返金できません。

• 大会参加および講演・企画の申込は、大会申込サイトから行っていただきます。
• すべての申込について、締切後の申込は一切受け付けられません。また、入力ミスは原則として訂正しない方針です。文字化けについても対応いたしませんので、十分ご注意ください。

一般講演（口頭・ポスター）

• 講演者（主たる説明者）になれるのは日本生態学会正会員のみです。
• 講演者は、締切までに、大会申込サイトからから発表登録を行うとともに、大会参加費を納入してください。

シンポジウム講演

• シンポジウムの講演者は、会員番号と講演タイトルをあらかじめシンポジウム企画者に伝えて下さい。企画者がすべての講演をまとめて登録します。その他の手続きは、企画者からの指示に従って進めてください。
• 大会企画委員会から認められた招聘・招待講演者を除き、申込・発表できるのは 2017年10月23日（月）までに入会・会費納入をすませた正会員のみです。
• 招聘・招待講演者以外は、大会申込サイトから大会参加費を納入してください。
• 各講演者は、2018年2月14日（水）までに大会申込サイトから講演要旨（日本語800文字/英語200words以内）を登録してください。

企画集会講演

• 大会企画委員会から認められた非会員講演者を除き、申込・発表できるのは、2017年10月23日（月）までに入会・会費納入をすませた正会員のみです。
• 企画集会の講演者は、会員番号と講演タイトルをシンポジウム企画者に伝えて下さい。企画者がすべての講演をまとめて登録します。その他の手続きは、企画者からの指示に従って進めてください。

自由集会講演

• 自由集会は学会員である集会企画者の責任によって行われ、非会員でも講演できます。また、自由集会のみに参加（講演を含む）する場合には大会参加費は不要です。

聴衆としての大会公式行事への参加

• 非会員の方でも、大会参加費をお支払いいただけば、聴衆として参加できます。
• 会員・非会員ともに、大会申込サイトから大会参加申込を行い、大会参加費を納入してください。当日参加も可能です。
• 大学の学部学生以下（中・高校生を含む）の大会参加費は、聴衆としての参加の場合、無料です（事前申込は行いませんので、当日大会の受付に学生証提示の上お申し出下さい）。また、高校生ポスター発表会での発表も無料です。ただし、その他の一般講演などで発表する場合は、大会参加費の支払いを含む通常の手続きが必要です。

参加・講演申込フローチャート

• 自由集会のみの講演者・聴講者は、会員、非会員にかかわらず、参加・講演申込は不要です。
• フォーラム講演者の講演申し込みは不要です。他の催しに参加しないのであれば、参加申込も不要です。

名札の事前郵送

• 当日受付の混雑解消のため、2018年2月9日（金）までに大会参加費を振り込まれた方には、大会申込サイトで登録した住所（日本国内の場合のみ）に名札などを郵送します。当日ご持参の上、直接、発表会場にお入りください。なお、大会申込サイトの登録住所が海外になっている方には、当日受付でお渡しします。
• 名札をお忘れになった場合は、当日受付にお申し出ください。
• 大会参加費を振り込んだにも関わらず、3月8日（木）までに名札が届かない場合は、大会ホームページの問い合わせページからお問い合わせください。

大会プログラム

• 大会プログラムは、2018年1月頃に大会公式ホームページで公開され、どなたでもご覧になれます。
• 大会プログラムの冊子は、2018年2月頃に国内の住所を登録されている日本生態学会の全ての会員に郵送されます（学会費未納の場合は除く）。プログラムの郵送を希望される会員は、必ず2017年内に2018年の学会費を納入してください。なお、会員登録住所が海外になっている会員には、当日受付でお渡しします。
• プログラム冊子は、当日受付にて1冊500円で販売します。非会員で冊子が必要な方は、お求めください。

講演要旨集

• 講演要旨集は、HTML版で作成し公開しますが、冊子体とPDF版は作成しません。
• HTML版講演要旨集は、2月中に大会公式ホームページから閲覧できる予定です。また、大会のすべての講演要旨は学会サイト（http://www.esj.ne.jp/meeting/abst/index.html）からZIP形式の圧縮ファイルで入手でき、ネット上と同じく、閲覧および日程表、講演者やキーワードの検索が可能です。

各種集会の企画提案

• シンポジウムの企画提案はすでに締め切られており、フォーラムについては委員会代表者に直接ご連絡します。
• 企画集会、自由集会については、「企画集会と自由集会」をお読みの上、企画をご提案ください。
• 企画提案時の概要（2017年10月31日（火）締め切り）がそのままプログラム・要旨集に掲載されます。また、差し替えには一切応じられませんので、ご了承ください。

企画集会と自由集会

• 下記の要領で、企画集会と自由集会を募集します。趣旨をご理解のうえ、奮ってお申込下さい。
• 企画集会・自由集会ともに、企画者は日本生態学会正会員である必要があります。企画集会、自由集会とも開催時間は約2時間の予定です。いずれの集会についても、大会企画委員会は内容に関与しませんが、概要などに個人および団体を誹謗中傷する内容などを含むと判断されるものについては、その限りではありません。

企画集会

• 企画集会の個別の講演の要旨は、講演要旨集に掲載されます。全体の趣旨説明と概要もプログラムと講演要旨集に掲載されます。
• 企画集会の企画者・講演者はシンポジウム及び他の企画集会の企画者・講演者になることはできません。
• 企画集会の企画者・講演者は一般講演（口頭発表、ポスター発表とも）の講演者にもなれません。
• 企画集会での講演者（主たる説明者）は原則、日本生態学会会員に限定されます。非会員による講演は特に事情がある場合に限り、企画あたり1件まで認められます。ただし、同一の非会員が2年連続で企画集会で講演することは認められません。また、非会員の講演者に対する大会参加費の免除は行いません。
• 要旨登録を行う「趣旨説明」や「コメント」は1講演とみなされ、その応募資格や重複制限は「講演」に準じます。要旨登録を伴わない趣旨説明やコメントは講演には数えません。
• 限られた会場を平等に分け合って使用するため、企画集会はできるだけ 3人以上の講演者で構成して下さい。

自由集会

• 自由集会は、新しい分野の立ち上げを助け、生態学の枠組みからはみ出す話題についても自由に議論できる場として、生態学会が伝統的に重視してきた集会です。しかしあくまでも関連集会であって、大会の正式行事ではありませんので、自由集会のみの参加者は大会参加者とはみなされません。
• 自由集会では、集会概要と各講演のタイトルのみがプログラムと講演要旨集に掲載され、個別の講演要旨は掲載されません。
• 一般講演、シンポジウムなどとの重複発表は認められますが、原則として日程の調整は行いません。
• 大会の正式行事ではありませんので、会場は集会主催者が責任をもって管理して下さい。
• 自由集会の時間枠は、大会初日の各種委員会や代議員会と並行した時間帯等に設定される可能性が高くなっています。これらの委員を企画・講演者・コメンテータ等に含む自由集会についても、原則として開催時間の調整は行いません。

応募要領

• 企画集会または自由集会の開催を希望される方は、2017年10月31日（火）17:00 までに大会申込サイトから集会の提案・概要登録を行って下さい。この際、講演者（主たる説明者及び共同発表者）と講演タイトルも併せて登録します。
• 企画集会の提案を登録する際、集会企画者と各講演の主たる説明者全員の会員番号が必要となります（非会員の講演者の場合はログインID）。また、企画者とすべての講演者が、大会申込サイト上で申込者情報の登録をあらかじめ済ませておく必要がありますので、早めのご準備をお願いいたします。会員番号は、マイページの会員検索機能によっても調べることができます（同姓同名にご注意ください）。
• 企画提案時の概要がそのままプログラム・要旨集に載ります。差し替えには一切応じられませんので、ご了承ください。

企画集会で非会員の講演を希望する場合

• 企画者は、集会の提案・概要登録の際に、非会員講演者の氏名と、その方の講演を必要とする理由を記入して下さい。
• 非会員の講演予定者には、あらかじめ大会申込サイトからログインIDを取得するよう依頼してください。ログインIDは企画提案の際に必要です。

企画集会と自由集会の採否について

• 企画集会は、自由集会に優先して採択されます。提案された集会（企画集会・自由集会）の数が会場の収容可能数を上回る場合には、全部の自由集会の開催を取りやめても会場が足りない場合にのみ抽選を行い、企画集会の採否を決定します。
• 自由集会の提案数が会場の収容可能数を上回る場合には、同一会員が重複して複数の集会（自由集会・企画集会）の企画者となっている自由集会を不採択とします。次に、シンポジウム企画者による自由集会を不採択とします。それでも数が多い場合には、抽選で自由集会の採否を決定します。
• 限られた場所と時間を分け合って使うため、シンポジウムおよび企画集会の企画者・講演者は自由集会の企画を可能なかぎりご遠慮下さい。2つ以上の自由集会の企画・講演もご遠慮下さい。
• 開催の可否については、11月中旬頃までにメールでご連絡します。

フォーラム

フォーラムとは、生態学会の各種委員会が企画し、生態学会の運営や学会が取り組んでいる生態学に関連する課題について広く会員の意見を募り、会員相互の情報共有を促すとともに、広範な議論により学会内の合意を形成することを目指すものです。フォーラムの企画やフォーラムでの話題提供は、重複講演制限の対象となりません。

一般講演

• 一般講演には口頭発表とポスター発表があります。申込時に希望（口頭発表かポスター発表）をお聞きしますが、会場の都合でご希望に沿えない場合もあります。
• 口頭発表には、英語口頭発表賞の審査対象者を含めた英語セッションと通常のセッションがあります。通常のセッションにおいて英語で発表することも可能です。
• 海外からの招待者や留学生など、日本語を解さない参加者との交流のためにも、日本語の発表の場合でも一部英語併記を推奨します。
• 発表内容に応じて会場・時間の割り振りやポスター賞のグループ分けを行うため、発表申込時に希望分野を選んでいただきます。一般講演申込のフォームに選択可能な分野一覧が示されますので、第三希望までお選び下さい。以下は発表申込のときに示される発表分野 (候補) の一覧です。

• 英語口頭発表賞に事前申し込みされた方も含め英語セッションでの発表を希望される方については、企画委員会が発表内容に応じた分野分けを行います。

注意

• 講演者(主たる説明者)は日本生態学会会員に限ります（共同発表者は会員である必要はありません）。
• 一人で二つ以上の講演の演者になることはできません（共同発表者になることは差し支えありません）。
• さらに、シンポジウムの企画者・講演者、企画集会の企画者・講演者は一般講演は行えません（口頭・ポスターとも）。
• これらの制限は、いずれも限られた場所と時間を分け合って使うための措置ですので、ご理解ください。

口頭発表の方法

• 口頭発表は、原則として、会場備え付けの機器を使用したマイクロソフト・パワーポイントあるいはPDFによる発表とします（持ち込みのコンピューターは使用できません）。発表用ファイルの登録締め切りは2018年3月7日(水)23:59です。
• ファイルの様式や容量を含め詳細は大会ホームページで追ってご案内します。
• 発表用ファイルを使用せず、印刷物を配布して発表することもできますが、十分な部数の配布物を発表者側で準備して頂きます。また、ファイル登録締め切りまでに、発表用ファイルを使用しない旨、大会ホームページの問い合わせページから申し出てください。

ポスター発表の方法

• ポスターボードは縦長（90 cm x 210 cm）のものを使用する予定です。ポスター発表は、大会期間中に3日に分けて行い、最大約1000件のポスター発表を収容できる予定です。ポスター発表の申込数が収容可能数を超えた場合は、一部の方に、口頭発表への変更をお願いすることがあります。
• 海外からの招待者や留学生など、日本語を解さない参加者との交流のためにも、英語での発表や、日本語の発表の場合でも、一部英語を併記したり、英語版の別刷りを用意したりすることを推奨します。
• ポスターを貼るための画鋲は持参して下さい。例年、会場周辺の店舗では品薄になりますので、ご注意下さい。

ポスター賞

若手研究者の研究活動を奨励するために、優秀なポスター発表に賞を贈ります。応募資格については、下記をご参照ください。ポスター発表に関する詳細は大会ホームページにも掲載しますので、ポスターを準備するときの参考にしてください。

ポスター賞応募資格について

本大会では、主たる発表者のポスター賞応募資格について以下の条件を設けます。

1. 一般講演の申込締め切り期限（2017年10月31日）の時点で博士号未取得の会員（学部学生、大学院生、研究生など）とします。
2. 過去の日本生態学会大会（ESJ）ポスター賞「最優秀賞」または「優秀賞」を受賞した者は、上記の条件を満たしていても応募できないものとします。過去の日本生態学会大会はEAFESと合同で運営された大会を含みます。

ポスター賞審査の要点

• 選考上重視されるポイントには以下のようなものがあります。ポスター賞応募者は、これらの点に十分考慮してポスター作成をお願いします。
  1. ポスターの情報伝達能力
     ポスター発表では、研究内容がわかりやすく表示されているかが重要です。例えば、（1）良いタイトル、（2）わかりやすい要旨、（3）視線を引きつける工夫、（4）短時間でおおまかな内容が伝えられる工夫などが必要でしょう。そのためには、字・図表が遠くからでも判読できる、情報過多でない、説明なしでも要点が理解できることなどが重要です。
  2. 研究の質
     （1）新規性・独創性、（2）データの質・量、（3）解析方法の妥当性、（4）議論・結論の妥当性について審査されます。
• なお、過去に審査対象であった「発表技術」は、審査対象に含まれません。優れたポスターは読んだだけでその意義を理解できると考えられるためです。また、ポスター賞の応募者が多いため、審査に要する負担が著しく高まっていることも理由の一つです。ただし、ポスターを見ただけでは評価しにくい項目については、審査員が発表を聴き質問して評価することがあります。
• また、本学会では国際交流に力を入れて取り組んでいます。このため、日本語を理解しない研究者に対して配慮がなされているかも重視します。審査の際には使用言語に関わらずポスターの内容についてのみ評価しますが、審査の結果同票だったポスターについては英語による理解が可能なポスターの順位を繰り上げます。英語による理解が可能なポスターとは、少なくとも、タイトル、イントロおよび結論が英語併記される等して、英語を読むだけで研究の概要を理解できる場合、あるいは英語の別刷りが用意されている場合に該当します。

高校生ポスター発表会・「みんなのジュニア生態学講座」

高校生ポスター発表会・「みんなのジュニア生態学」は、生態学の社会への普及のため、日本生態学会によるアウトリーチ活動の一環として企画します。大会会期中に高校生（中学生も歓迎です）にポスター発表をしていただき、生態学に関連する諸分野の研究者や学生との交流を通して、生態学全般への関心をもっていただくのが本企画のねらいです。生き物の生態や環境に関わる生物学の内容であれば、どのような分野や題材の発表でも大歓迎です。なお、高校生ポスター発表会での発表は、大会参加費は不要（無料）です。
「みんなのジュニア生態学講座―高校生と研究者の交流会」も今年で4年目を迎えます。現在活躍中の生態学者の高校生や大学生の頃や現在の研究に至った経緯などを話してもらい、高校生に研究者を身近に感じてもらう交流会を行います。詳細は随時、大会公式ホームページなどでお知らせします。

参加費

無料。発表者（人数に制限なし）および引率者は、大会参加費が免除されます。

発表資格

原則として、高等学校または高等学校に相当する教育機関に在籍する生徒であること。国籍は問いません。

発表内容

生態や環境に関わる生物学の内容であれば、どのような分野や題材の発表でも受け付けます。既に他の学会等で発表された研究の場合、そこからどのように発展したのかを含め、研究の集大成・経過報告としてご発表ください。

発表数

本大会においては、1校あたりの発表数は最大4件までとします。ただし、発表の応募総数が50件を超えた場合は、発表件数の多い高校を対象に、発表数の調整をお願いすることがあります。

発表方法

本大会の指定するパネルサイズ（横90 cm x 縦210 cmの予定）に納まるポスターをご準備ください。当日、9:00にはポスターを貼ることができます。発表者（複数可）は、発表コアタイムにポスターの説明を口頭で行ってください。コアタイムは決定後申込者にお知らせします。

審査員

ポスター1件につき複数名の審査員が配置され、質問やコメント、アドバイスをします。

ポスター賞

選考委員会が内容を評価し、発表されたポスターは最優秀賞、優秀賞などとして表彰します。

みんなのジュニア生態学講座ー高校生と研究者の交流会

日本生態学会で現在大活躍中の研究者3名に、ご自身の研究内容だけでなく、生態学の研究を目指したきっかけや中学～高校の様子を語って頂きます。

申込み手順

• これまで電子メールで受け付けていた発表申込を、前大会からは大会申込サイトからオンラインで行っています。発表を希望する高校は、大会公式ホームページで随時最新情報をご確認ください。2017年10月18日（水）23:59 を締切とする予定です。なお発表希望申込数が非常に多い場合には、申込先着順で打ち切る可能性もありますので、早めの申込をよろしくお願いいたします。
• 申込者は顧問の教員または保護者とします。必ずしも、大会当日に生徒を引率する方でなくてもかまいませんが、要旨登録などの諸手続きに責任を負っていただける方にしてください。
• 発表内容の要旨（日本語で800字以内）は、2018年2月13日（火）23:59 までに同じく大会申し込みサイトから登録していただきます。
• 第65回日本生態学会札幌大会の高校生ポスター発表に係る派遣依頼文書は担当者より2月中旬までにメール等で送付予定です。定められた様式がある場合には別途お問い合わせください。

英語口頭発表賞

本大会では、第5回英語口頭発表賞を実施します。英語口頭発表賞 (EPA) への応募希望者は ESJ65での講演登録の前の2017年10月1日までにEPA への仮登録を行うことが必要です。詳しくはホームページ (https://sites.google.com/site/esj65engpresenaward/)を御覧ください。また、お近くで興味のありそうな方にも、ぜひこの情報をお伝えしてください。

賞の目的

英語口頭発表の設立目的は、大会における英語による研究発表を振興し、留学生や国外からの参加者との議論の場をより多く作ることです。同時に、特に若手研究者のコミュニケーション能力と国際的情報発信力を高める機会を増やしたいと考えています。本賞は英語の流暢さなどの言語能力を競うものではありません。応募者には発表の学問的内容と発表技術や姿勢を競っていただきます。

応募資格および方法

• 日本生態学会の会員で、学生（学部、修士課程、博士課程）または2018年3月までで学位取得後5年以内の若手研究員であること。なお、育児/介護休暇はこの5年間に含みません。過去の英語口頭発表賞の受賞者も応募可能です。
• 発表は質疑応答3分間を含む15分間です。口頭説明の言語は英語ですが、発表スライドは英語または和英併記とします。
• 受賞者は日本生態学会から賞状と Springer より副賞として本が贈呈されます。
• 応募者は日本生態学会の本登録の1ヶ月前（2017年10月1日）までに、英語口頭発表賞部会 () にE-mail にて発表に関する以下の情報（暫定的なもので構いません）を連絡し、仮登録を行う必要があります。1. タイトル、2.著者全員の氏名と所属、3. 日本生態学会の会員か否か、4. 以下のリストから選んだキーワード3つ

審査基準

• 各部門に数人の審査員が割り当てられます。
• すべての発表は研究の質(50%)と発表の質（50%）を審査され、採点されます。
• 各部門ごとに得点を集計し、原則としてそれぞれの部門の1位と2位の発表者に最優秀賞と優秀賞が与えられます。

英語口頭発表賞のポリシー

• すべての発表は英語で行います。
• 英語の言語技術（流暢さなど）ではなく、科学コミュニケーションを英語で行うという姿勢を重要視します。
• 発表者、聴衆、審査員すべてが、和気あいあいとした講演会場になるように努力し、英語での科学コミュニケーションの促進をはかります。

English Presentation Award

The 5th English Presentation Award (EPA) will be organized in the 65th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of Japan (ESJ65) at Sapporo in March 2018. Title and abstract submission to EPA is open until October 1, 2017! Please see our website (https://sites.google.com/site/esj65engpresenawarden/home) for more details. We would appreciate you providing this information to those who are potentially interested in the EPA.

Aim of the award

The English Presentation Award (EPA) aims to promote English presentations in the ESJ annual meetings and to give all participants more opportunities to share scientific ideas with international students and visiting researchers in Japan. At the same time, the EPA working group gives students and early career members an opportunity to gain experience in scientific communication, particularly experience that will be useful in international meetings.

Eligibility and application

• Eligibility is limited to Ecological Society of Japan (ESJ) members who are students (undergraduates, graduate students and PhD candidates) or early career researchers who have received PhD, no more than 5 years before March 2018. Work weeks of parental leave or family leave are not included in this 5-year limitation. Past EPA winners are also eligible to submit their applications.
• All participants need to prepare their presentation with a time slot of 15 minutes, which includes approximately 3 minutes for questions and discussions.
• The winner will receive a certificate from ESJ and a book will be awarded as a supplemental gift by Springer.
• All those who wish to be considered for the EPA must contact the EPA working group () at least 1 month prior to the ESJ official registration (October 1, 2017) to provide provisional information of your presentation as follows: 1. Title, 2. Names and affiliations of authors, 3. Whether you are an ESJ member or not (Yes or No), 4. Three key words selected from the list below

The EPA working group will arrange programs based on the submitted information. We will send a confirmation e-mail for each submission. If there is no response within a week, please contact again.

Judgement criteria

• A few judges are assigned in each session.
• All presentations are judged and scored based on the quality of research (50%) and quality of presentation (50%).
• Best award and excellent award will be awarded to first and second place finishers of each session.

• All presentations must be in English.
• Please note that we are more concerned with attitude towards science communication in English rather than English language skill.
• We expect a friendly atmosphere in English sessions.

日本生態学会第21回公開講演会

極限環境に棲む生物は、ユニークな形態や生活様式を持ったものが多いですが、それは、厳しい環境を生きる上で効率的な生き方をしていることの現れです。しかし、その生態特性の意味については、一般にはよく理解されていません。また、極限環境では、生物活動は微妙な環境条件のバランスの上で成り立っており、気候変動など大きな環境変化に対して脆弱です。本講演会では、普段は目にすることのない様々な極限環境に暮らす生物の適応様式を一挙に紹介するとともに、それらに忍び寄る気候変動の脅威について紹介し、極限に棲む生物を科学することの魅力と重要性を社会へ伝えたいと考えています。

Note that extra bank fee may be charged for a cancellation or additional payment due to the mechanical constraint of our online payment system.

Student rates will be applied to the registration and the banquet fees for those who are young members without regular income. For members certified as “young member without regular income in 2018″, please state that in the registration.
The purpose of banquet is to facilitate communication among researchers in a relaxed atmosphere. Banquet has provided valuable opportunities especially for young researchers to meet other scientists and gain new research opportunities. To meet this goal, we set banquet fees as low as possible for student attendees and ask for a high banquet fee for non-student attendees. We appreciate your understanding and contribute to participate in the banquet.
You can cancel the banquet free of charge by February 9, 2018. After that time, no refunds will be made.

Visa application

Passport holders of China, India, Russia, the Philippines, Indonesia, NIS countries and other nationalities that do not have visa exemption agreements with Japan require entry visa to Japan. Check and see if you require visa through “Guide to Japanese Visa” at the website of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Note that the standard processing period for visa application is five working days. For the documents to be provided from Japan, the ESJ office will provide necessary support. If you require a letter of invitation to support your visa application, you must first register to attend the 65th Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of Japan.
Once you receive a registration confirmation email, please send your request for a letter of invitation by email to the ESJ office ().

Registration

• Please complete the registration application and the payment for the registration and the banquet fees through the online registration system.

• No changes and additions due to improper input or garbled characters will be accepted after the deadline.
• Organizers and speakers should register their sessions or presentations on the online registration system. Registered data will be used to compile the Program Book.
• Please refer this additional instruction for organizers and speakers of symposia, organized sessions, workshops, and forums.

Oral and Poster presentations

• The speaker (or main contributor at poster sessions) of each presentation has to be a member of ESJ. ESJ members should pay the membership fee for 2017 by October 23, 2017. If you are not an ESJ member but would like to give a presentation, apply for an ESJ membership and pay the member fee by October 23, 2017.
• Speakers should register their presentation and complete payment on the online registration system before the deadline.
• Abstracts (200 words for English) must be submitted before the deadline through the online registration system.

Symposia

• Symposium speakers should follow symposium organizer’s guidance to complete necessary procedures.
• Symposium speakers are limited only to ESJ members who have paid the ESJ membership fee by October 23, 2017, except for invited non-member speakers approved by the Planning Committee.
• Symposium speakers must finish registeration through the online registration system and inform the symposium organizer their membership ID (or login ID for non-member). The speakers should also inform the title of their presentation to the symposium organizer(s). The symposium organizer(s) will submit the titles all together.
• Symposium speakers except for invited non-member speakers must pay the registration fee through the online registration system.
• Each speaker must submit abstract (200 words for English) through the online registration system.

Organized sessions

• Speakers of organized sessions are limited only to ESJ members who have paid the ESJ membership fee by October 23, 2017, except for invited non-member speakers approved by the Planning Committee.
• Each speakers must register your information on the online registration system and inform the session organizer of your membership ID (or login ID for non-member). The speakers should also inform the session organizer(s) of the title of the presentation. The session organizer(s) will submit the titles all together.
• Abstract submission and payment should be done through the online registration system.

Workshops

• Workshops are conducted on the responsibility of organizers who are ESJ members, but speakers of workshops are not limited to ESJ members. For people who participate only in workshops (including speakers), no registration fee is required.

• Those who are currently not ESJ members but are to be a speaker and/or organizer should apply and pay for the 2018 membership by October 23, 2017. This deadline also applies to those who wish to rejoin ESJ due to failing to pay the membership fee in previous years.

Participating as audience

• Non-ESJ-members can be a part of the audience of any session after paying the registration fee.
• Please conduct the participation application and the payment for the registration fee on the online registration system. On-site application is also accepted.
• The registration fee is not required for undergraduate and younger (junior high school and high school) students if they attend as audience (No need for advance online registration. Please come to the reception desk at the meeting, and show your student ID). The registration fee is also not required for participating in “the poster presentations by high school students”. However, for students planning to give a presentation in another session, such as oral/poster presentations, it is necessary to conduct the participation application including the payment of the registration fee.

Registration flow chart

• If you are a speaker at a workshop or forum, registration of your presentation is not necessary. Your session organizer will register your presentation on your behalf.
• If you are a speaker at a symposium or an organized session (including a non-ESJ-member), you need to register your presentation and submit an abstract via the online registration system.

Name tags

To avoid congestion at the reception on the meeting days, participants in Japan who have completed payment by February 9 will receive their name tags at their registered addresses. Please bring it to the meeting venue and wear it during the meeting. If you do not receive your name tag by March 8, 2018, please contact us via the inquiry form.

• Participants from abroad can pick up their name tags at the reception.
• If you forget your name tag, please stop at the reception.

Program Book

• A Program Book (electronic version) will be available on the official website around January 2018.
• The Program Book of the meeting will be sent around February 2018 to all ESJ members in Japan who have paid the membership fee. Please pay the fees in advance by October 23, 2017 to receive a copy.
• If you are an ESJ member of overseas residence, you can pick up the Program Book at the reception.
• Non-ESJ-members can purchase the Program Book at the on-site registration for 500 yen.

Book of abstracts (HTML version only)

The book of abstracts will not be printed or edited as PDF. Only HTML version will be available in February 2018 on the official website including a mobile phone version. All abstracts, including those in the previous meetings are available on the ESJ official website as compressed ZIP files. After decompression, you will be able to browse and search for schedules, speakers and keywords.

Call for organized sessions and workshops

• Proposals for the organized sessions and workshops must be submitted by 17:00 (JST) October 31, 2017. The registered contents will be used for the Program Book and Book of abstracts. No changes and additions to the proposals will be accepted after the deadline.
• An ESJ membership is required to be an organizer of either an organized session or a workshop. Both sessions are about 2 hours long. The Planning Committee will not modify the contents of proposals except if libel exists against any individual and/or organizations.

Organized sessions

• Individual abstracts of each presentaion in organized sessions will appear in the abstract page of the official website of ESJ65. Session introductions and summaries will appear on both of the Program Book and the Book of abstracts on the above website.
• An organizer or a speaker of an organized session may not serve as an organizer or speaker in a symposium or another organized session.
• An organizer or a speaker of an organized session may not serve as a speker of oral or poster presentation.
• In general, speakers of organized sessions are limited only to ESJ members. As an exception, one non-ESJ member can be a speaker in each organized session, but justification for the exception should be included in the session proposal. The exception does not apply for an individual who has served as a session speaker for two consecutive years.
• If the introduction or comment for an organized session has an abstract, the speaker will be considered as a regular speaker. Please see the tables “Qualifications for applications” and “Comparison of symposium, organized session and workshop”.
• For efficient use of time and space available, an organized oral session should consist of at least three speakers.

Workshops

• Workshops have traditionally been valued in ESJ annual meetings as a means to promote free discussions on innovative topics, some of which can even step beyond the framework of ecology. However, workshops are not considered as an official function of the meeting, and those who only attend workshops will not be considered as participants of the ESJ meeting.
• The introduction and summary of a workshop will appear on both of the Program Book and the Book of abstracts on the above website. Individual abstracts from the speakers will not be accepted.
• A speaker in a workshop may have a presentation in another session (including symposium or organized session) or oral/poster session. However, the Planning Committee will not, in principle, make arrangement of the schedules.
• Since workshops are not considered as an official function of the meeting, we kindly ask organizers to manage the room responsibly.
• Workshops are likely held concurrently with business meetings on the first day of ESJ65. The Planning Committee will not, in principle, make arrangement of the schedules for those who are attendees of those business meetings.

Proposal submission

• Proposals for organized sessions and workshops including their outlines must be received via the online registration system by 17:00 (JST), October 31, 2017. A proposal for an organized session must include a session summary, a full list of speakers and their co-authors, and presentation titles.
• Session or workshop organizers and all speakers in organized sessions should register as participants. Speakers in organized sessions should notify their membership IDs or, for non-members, login IDs to their session organizer.
• The registered contents will be used for the Program Book and Book of abstracts. No changes and additions of the proposals will be accepted after the deadline.

Non-ESJ-member speakers at organized sessions

• Organizers should enter the names of non-ESJ member speakers and the reasons for the presentation in the space provided for “presentation proposals by non-ESJ-members” on the registration system.
• Non-ESJ memberspeakers should obtain their login IDs via the online registration system.

Acceptance of proposals

• Proposals for organized session will receive higher priority over workshop proposals. In case there are not enough meeting rooms for the proposed organized sessions even after cancelling all workshops, we will decide the proposals for organized session by drawing lots.
• If the number of workshop proposals exceeds the capacity of the venue, we will first decline workshop proposals from proposers who submit more than one session and/or workshop proposals, and then those from proposers who submit a symposium proposal. If the space is still not enough, decisions will be made by drawing lots.
• To make best use of limited space and time, those who have submitted proposals for symposium and another session as an organizer are requested to not apply for a workshop. An organizer is not allowed to submit more than one proposal of workshop.
• Decisions on approved workshops will be made within about two weeks after the deadline.

Forum

Forums are organized by the ESJ committees and are aimed at inviting opinions on issues related to ecology. ESJ is addressing, promoting and sharing information among ESJ members, and developing agreement in ESJ by widespread discussion. Organizing and providing topics are exempt from the “one presentation rule”. Representatives from each committee of ESJ should apply.

Oral and poster sessions

• ESJ members are invited to give a presentation in either oral or poster session. Please choose your preference for the presentation style (oral or poster). However, due to limitation in space and time, we may ask you to change your presentation style (oral or poster).
• For assigning room and time for oral presentations and sorting poster presentations appropriately by the topic, we ask you to choose sections from the below list that matches your presentation when applying for a presentation. Notice

• A speaker (or main contributor at poster sessions) of each presentation has to be a member of ESJ (co-authors need not be ESJ members).
• Each ESJ member is allowed to represent only one oral or poster presentation as a speaker (she/he can copresent more than one).
• Oral and poster presentations are closed to organizers and speakers in symposia and organized sessions.
• These restrictions are imposed for sharing limited space and time.

Preparing oral presentations

• Oral presentations are given by computers equipped in the room in either Microsoft Power Point or PDF format. The use of your own PC is not acceptable. Procedures on how to register files for presentation will be announced in due course. Details will be posted on the official website.
• If you use handouts instead of a presentation file, please prepare sufficient copies. In that case, please notify in advance via the inquiry form.

Preparing poster presentations

• Each poster will be mounted on a 90-cm-wide by 210-cm-high poster board. Daily poster session will be conducted for three days. About 1000 posters are expected to be accepted in total. We may ask you to move to oral presentation if the applications for poster presentation exceed the capacity.
• Please bring drawing pins to stick your poster onto the poster board.

Poster Award

The Ecological Society of Japan (ESJ) will award young researchers presenting excellent posters. Please refer to the following qualification requirements. Details for poster presentations will be posted on the official website. Please prepare your poster, referring to the points outlined on the website.

Poster award qualifications

Each winner must be the primary author of the poster presentation. In addition, the following criteria will be applied:

• Undergraduate, graduate students, or scientists without a doctoral degree before October 31, 2017 are eligible to apply for Poster Awards in ESJ65.
• Previous poster award winners (including those from the joint annual meetings with EAFES) cannot apply for the award.

Poster award criteria

Below are the criteria used to select excellent posters. Please prepare your poster, referring to the points below.
(A) Clarity of the poster
In poster presentation, it is important to illustrate the contents of your research concisely. The following feature will be required: 1) Precise title, 2) Simple abstract, 3) Efforts to draw attention, 4) Efforts to convey the outline. Figures and tables should be easy to read from a distance and avoid information overload. Comprehensive outline without explanation will also be important.

(B) Quality of the study
1) Originality and innovativeness, 2) Quality and quantity of data, 3) Validity of analyzing methods, 4) Validity of discussion and conclusion, will be evaluated. We have excluded “presentation technique” which had been a criterion for judgment from evaluation since the 61st meeting because excellent posters are often understandable just by reading them. The increased burden on judges for the review of a large number of applications is also one reason for the change. For items which are difficult to assess by just observing, judges might evaluate them by listening to the presentation and asking questions.
As the ESJ is promoting international communication, we put an emphasis on posters that make consideration to those who do not understand Japanese. During the review process, only the contents of the posters are evaluated regardless of language. However, if two or more posters have tied scores, priority will be given to the posters understandable in English or those that promote international communication.
“Posters understandable in English” means that at least the title, introduction and conclusion are written in English so that the outline of the research can be understood by reading them, or by the prepared English translation.
If you have an English translation (document), please display it beside your poster.

English Presentation Award

The English Presentation Award (EPA) aims to promote English presentations in the ESJ annual meetings and to give all participants more opportunities to share scientific ideas with international students and visiting researchers in Japan. At the same time, the EPA working group gives students and early career members an opportunity to gain experience in scientific communication, particularly experience that will be useful in international meetings.

Eligibility and application

• Eligibility is limited to Ecological Society of Japan (ESJ) members who are students (undergraduates, graduate students and PhD candidates) or early career researchers who have received PhD, no more than 5 years before March 2018. Work weeks of parental leave or family leave are not included in this 5-year limitation. Past EPA winners are also eligible to submit their applications.
• All participants need to prepare their presentation with a time slot of 15 minutes, which includes approximately 3 minutes for questions and discussions.
• The winner will receive a certificate from ESJ and a book will be awarded as a supplemental gift by Springer Nature.
• All those who wish to be considered for the EPA must contact the EPA working group () at least one month prior to the ESJ official registration (October 1, 2017) to provide provisional information of your presentation as follows: 1. Title, 2. Names and affiliations of authors, 3. Whether you are an ESJ member or not (Yes or No), 4. Three key words selected from the list below.

The EPA working group will arrange programs based on the submitted information. We will send a confirmation e-mail for each submission. If there is no response within a week, please contact again.

You need an ESJ membership ID when you register for the meeting. So, we strongly recommend you to complete your ESJ membership registration soon after your application to EPA is accepted. Judgement criteria

• A few judges are assigned in each session.
• All presentations are judged and scored based on the quality of research (50%) and quality of presentation (50%).
• Best award and excellent awards will be presented to the first- and the second-place finishers of each session.

EPA Policy

• All presentations must be given in English.
• Please note that we are more concerned with attitude towards science communication in English rather than English language skills.
• We expect a friendly atmosphere in English sessions.
