Environmental assessment using web spiders

Yamato, I. (Ryukoku Univ.)et al.

This study compares the web-spider community and woodland environment to advance the methodology of the environmental assessment. Study was conducted at four sites with different vegetation in a small woodland adjacent to the campus of Ryukoku University in Otsu, Japan, during August-November 2010. Web-spiders were recorded by the eye-census along the route and sweeping method. The latter and the survey of vegetation were carried out in a 50m × 50m quadrat in each site. Web-spider species were divided into two groups by assemblage and habitat-use similarities. One group was consisted of web-spiders living in the open grassland and another in shaded woodland. The former contains small species which collected by the sweeping method but mostly missed by the eye-census. The species of latter group were difficult to collect by the sweeping method due to high density of vegetation, and only the eye-census was available to record them. Thus it was suggested that the web-spiders, by combining different observation methods, are useful to evaluate the mosaic structure of “SATOYAMA”.
