Fine-scale spatial genetic structure (FSGS, the non-random spatial distribution of genotypes at fine-spatial scale) of plant species is usually characterized by the negative relationship between genetic similarity and spatial distance between individuals. Limited seed dispersal is the dominant factor shaping FSGS. A new method is being developed for estimating seed dispersal distance (σs) from FSGS under the assumption that pollen dispersal is uniform over a study plot and seed dispersal is quite limited (Hardy & Rousset, unpublished). In this study, we estimated the seed dispersal distances of dipterocarp species by analyzing their FSGS in a 52-ha plot at Lambir Hills National Park, Sarawak Malaysia. We found that the estimated seed dispersal distances were 12.2-43 m. These values were consistent with the previous studies that the seed dispersal distance of dipterocarp species was usually less than 50 m. We investigated the relationship between the index of seed dispersal ability and the estimated seed dispersal distances. The species with low seed dispersal ability had shorter estimated seed dispersal distances than the species with high seed dispersal ability.
