Despite the evidence that land use land cover (LULC) is an important determinant of the natural environment, LULC changes has been widely used as indicators of environmental conditions and quality evaluation such as water quality, nutrient and soil fertility, etc. The aim of this study was to determine changes of LULC pattern and water quality in Batang Merao Watershed. Watershed and catchments were units of analyses. LULC changes were analysed by using GIS and remote sensing with supervised classification method from multi temporal Landsat data taken in 1990, 2000, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Water samples were taken at 18 sampling points from selected catchments and several of important chemical parameters were analysed. The results revealed that the study area has experienced dynamic changes in the LULC over the study period 1990-2011. A great decrease in forest are and a rapid expansion of agricultural land, mixed plantation and settlement areas have been observed. The result also showed dynamic changes in several water quality parameters. Furthermore, this indicated that the LULC change in the catchment areas played a vital role in relation with the water quality. It is therefore important for watershed managers to reduce the impacts of LULC changes through an appriopriate land use regulation.
