In tropical rain forests of Borneo, three species of porcupine, Malayan porcupines (Hystrix brachyura), thick-spined porcupines (H. crassispinis) and long-tailed porcupines (Trichys fasciculate). Our knowledge on porcupines in tropical rain forests is still very limited because most of previous studies focused on species living in arid environments. We started a research on porcupine species living in tropical rainforests in Kabili-sepilok Forest Reserve and the Tabin Wildlife Reserve Sabah, Malaysia, in 2010-2011. We found long-tailed porcupine in Sepilok and all the three pocupine species in Tabin with the camera traps. We found a burrow of long-tailed porcupine in Sepilok and two burrows of thick-spined porcupines in Tabin. It was suggested that we can estimate the porcupine species that used the barrow from the size of its entrance, and they share the burrows with family members. Although both long-tailed porcupines and thick-spined porcupines were nocturnal, the two species showed different moving patterns during the night. Seasonal change in camera-trapped frequency of long-tailed porcupines was similar to those of animals that prefer fruits, while that of thick-spined porcupine was similar to those of animals that prefer grass and leave, suggesting some differences in their food resources.
