Evodiopanax innovans has been reported to be able to accumulate Cd and Zn at high concentrations in its leaves. The previous studies on the accumulations of heavy metals in E. innovans has been conducted in relatively acidic forest soils such as secondary forest soils in Nagoya or in old mining. Then, we focus on the metal accumulation of E. innovans grown on ultrabasic soil in this study. We measured the seasonal changes of metal concentrations in the leaves of E. innovans grown on two types of bedrocks, serpentine which is ultrabasic and contains large amount of Ni and Mg and crystalline schist, and considered the influence of different types of soil on accumulation of heavy metals in E. innovans.
Leaf samples of E. innovans were collected four times and its rhizospheric soils were also collected at depth of 5 cm from the secondary forests located in Shinshiro city, Aichi. Their concentrations of elements were measured by ICP-AES.
The results showed that the concentrations of Cd, Zn and Mn in leaves differed between two types of soil and reflected their contents in the soils. However, the concentrations of Cu and Fe were almost same without effect by the soil types. This suggests that some control mechanism exists to keep the concentration of Cu and Fe in leaves of E. innovans.
