There are three different approaches for estimation of above ground biomass available; first based on field measurements, GIS and remote sensing methods. We have focused on estimating above ground biomass through forest inventory via remote sensing data. In this research thesis we used ALOS satellite data for forest inventory to estimate above ground biomass. Two sensorsof the ALOS are used as AVNIR-2 is multispectral band with 10m resolution on the ground and PRISM is panchromatic band with 2.5m resolution on the ground. Three case studies in Iran of estimation of above ground biomass. Each case studies have dominant species as scientific name; Cupressus Sempervirens var. horizontalis, Juniperus excelsa subsp. Polycarpos and Pistacia vera. The coefficient regression between data derived from vegetation indices and data from tree measuring by field surveys was applied. We hope the result of this research will enable better decision making for natural resource managers in fields of environmental benefit and give reliable inventory data of valuable resources from arid and semi-arid areas to lead to sustainable management in general.
