Ant Wars: Episode X - A synthetic trail pheromone barrier forbids the procession of Argentine ants

*Eiriki SUNAMURA (ARGANT)

Members of ARGANT have tried to control Argentine ants in Japan using a trail disruption technique with synthetic trail pheromone. Here I present results of our ant wars for 10 years, which can be summarized as follows. 1) Trails of Argentine ants were disrupted when high concentration of a synthetic trail pheromone was dispersed in the atmosphere. 2) The trail disruption led to reduced recruitment of Argentine ants to food sources. 3) Hoping that reduced foraging efficiency leads to suppression of colony growth rate, a year-long treatment with synthetic trail pheromone dispensers was conducted on 100 m2 plots of house gardens in an urban district of Iwakuni City, but no clear control effect was obtained within the plots. 4) However, combined treatment with synthetic trail pheromone dispensers and insecticidal baits effectively suppressed ant populations within the 100 m2 plots. 5) Under the strategy of inhibiting ant migration with synthetic trail pheromone and suppressing ant population with insecticidal bait, Argentine ants were successfully eliminated from most of the 6.7-ha habitat range in Yokohama Port.
