Urban public parks serve vital recreation resource for the well-being of urban residents.Nevertheless,the aspect of nature for attracting urban dwellers from different social and demographic backgrounds to parks remains ambiguous.This research assesses nature attractions at six tropical urban parks in Malaysia.We investigated which are the nature attributes attracting people to the parks. We examined the relationships between type of parks,visitors’ characteristics (gender, age, marital status, ethnicity, income) and nature attributes.Then, we discussed the people motives’ for nature in urban parks. The respondents tended to agree that outdoor recreation activities are the main attraction in the urban parks (M = 4.17),but results of multiple regression analysis showed a clear relationship between shadiness element and the visitors’ characteristics as predictor variables (age,ethnicity and income. We found that “to be in nature” was the main visitors’ motives and confirmed that shady trees in the urban parks were and important attraction in tropical urban parks.Importance of shady trees as features for green atmosphere should be emphasized as an input to local governments.
