We report asexual reproduction in laboratory colonies of the Asian dry-wood termite, Neotermes koshunensis [Kalotermitidae]. Using virgin males and females reared in laboratory, colonies were founded by female-male pairs (FM), female-female pairs (FF), and single females (F). In observation period for 90 days, small larvae were found in both of sexual colonies and asexual colonies. Genetic analysis using microsatellites showed these offspring found in asexual colonies were produced by parthenogenesis. The offspring produced in sexual colonies were mostly produced by sexual reproduction. The restoration of ploidy in parthenogenesis of this species is most likely accomplished by terminal fusion. Probably, parthenogenetic eggs show a higher mortality and a longer egg-development time than sexually produced eggs. The occurrence situation and frequency of asexual reproduction in field colonies of this species requires further investigation.
