The Fire Ant Countermeasure by the Ministry of the Environment and National Institute for Environmental Studies

*GOKA, Kouichi(国立環境研究所)

Under the Alien Species Act, the Ministry Of the Environment’s top priority has been to control, and ultimately eradicate, the invasive alien species established in Japan, while also preventing new alien species introduction. And we National Institute for Environment Studies have conducted invasive alien species risk assessment and research in development of eradication methods for 15 years supporting the national policy. For example, we successfully eradicated the Argentine ant Linepithema humile population around Tokyo Bay and then in other parts of the Kanto area by using chemical baits. Since the first detection of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta in Japan in this summer, both the MOE and NIES have promoted the emergency control for the new invasive ant. The MOE, collaborated with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, have surveyed 68 ports possessing the regular container imports from China and/or Taiwan. And also negotiations with these countries are proceeding for applying baits in the container when shipped. We NIES has developed a molecular technique to identify the presence of the fire ant by using DNA barcoding and LAMP (loop-mediated isothermal amplification) methods. Furthermore, we are constructing the chemical control strategy for the ant. For advancing these fire ant countermeasures, the MOE and NIES are planning to establish the Invasive Alien Ant Control Center.
