Pollen grains, the male gamete vectors, is an important biotic factor influencing reproductive fitness in flowering plant. We have a rich literature documenting how flowering plants attract pollinators by pollen grains, but the purpose of high nitrogen content pollen production in apomictic species is still unclear. Here we show the experimental evidence that pollen grains in apomictic Taraxacum can act as defense mechanism against florivories through using the triploid hybrid dandelion with pollen and tetraploid without pollen. Because pollen grains and ovules have high nutrient value, the orthopterans preferred to only feed on stigma with pollen of triploid, and preferred to damage on whole floret of tetraploid hybrid without pollen. Consequently, the seed reproductive rate of tetraploid hybrid decreased obviously after the feeding damage occurs, but the triploid hybrid seemed more or less unaffected. The results of our work offer the pollen grains of apomictic Taraxacum can reduce the influence from feeding damage by florivories effectively and act as indirect floral defense.
