Ecological and remote sensing/GIS studies of carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems in South Korea.

A Pinus densiflora forest was located to investigate ecosystem carbon storage in central Korea (Jungbu site). Ecosystem carbon storage was divided into vegetation carbon storage (VCS) and soil carbon storage (SCS). Vegetation biomass and carbon storage of P. densiflora were estimated from the developed allometric equations and diameter at breast height (DBH), and SCS was measured by soil carbon concentration, bulk density, and soil depth. Plot-based carbon measurements showed that VCS had a close relationship with DBH while SCS with tree age and stand density. Also there was a relationship between DBH and tree crown width of P. densiflora. A process of up-scaling VCS in P. densiflora from plot to watershed levels was developed in the region; mean DBH and number of P. densiflora trees were estimated by visual interpretation of satellite imagery for the forest. The current study showed that the watershed-level VCS of P. densiflora could be estimated from spatial distribution map prepared using high resolution satellite imagery of Quickbird. However, more studies are needed to up-scale SCS from plot to watershed levels for the forest.
