Carbon dynamics of pine wilt desease stands in southen Korea

This study was conducted to evaluate the carbon dynamics in natural red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) stands damaged by pine wilt disease in Jinju city, where was one of areas severely affected by the disease in Korea. There was a significant correlation (P < 0.05) between tree density or basal area and the carbon concentration and inputs of litter fall components, while was not correlated (P > 0.05) by mean diameter at breast height (DBH) in pine wilt disease stands. Carbon concentration of needle, branch or bark litter was linear related (P < 0.05) with basal area in pine wilt disease stands. The linear regression equations developed for carbon inputs of litter fall components were significant (P < 0.05) with basal area accounting for 62 - 84% of the variation except for the carbon inputs of cone and flower. Mean annual soil CO2 efflux rates showed the second-order polynomial relationships with basal area, tree density and mean DBH in pine wilt disease stands. The results indicated that the incidence of pine wilt disease could have an impact to the quality and quantity of carbon by litter fall and soil respiration dynamics.
