Short term effect of experimental warming on soil environment surrounding oak and pine seedlings

We determined the short-term influence of warming on soil temperature, moisture, and respiration in a field experiment located in central Korea where Quercus variabilis and Pinus densiflora seedlings were exposed to warming treatment. One-year-old oak and pine seedlings were each planted in 1m x 1m plots (n = 4) and warmed with infrared lamps. The air temperature in warmed plots was 2?</sup)C higher than that of control plots. During winter, soil temperature and moisture content at 5 cm depth was higher under warming treatment. In oak-planted plots, the soil temperature was -0.1 ? 0.9 ?</sup)C under warming treatment vs. -1.1 ? 0.4 ?</sup)C under control treatment and soil moisture was 5.2 ? 0.7% under elevated temperature vs. 3.9 ? 0.5% under ambient temperature. Similarly, in plots planted with pine seedlings, the soil temperature was 0.4 ? 0.4 ?</sup)C under warming treatment vs. -1.4 ? 0.5?</sup)C under control treatment, and the soil moisture content was 4.37 ? 1.07% under elevated temperature vs. 3.2 ? 0.6% under ambient temperature. Warming treatment did not alter soil CO2 concentrations. Higher soil moisture in warming plots is likely due to snowmelt. Changes in soil environment by elevated temperature are likely to influence the growth of oak and pine seedlings, and thus further studies need to focus on determining such changes.
