Luchman Hakim (IDEC student) and Nobukazu Nakagoshi (IDEC)

Recently, increasing demand of environmentally sound tourism accommodation led to ecolodge development around the world. Ecolodge is a environmentally sound accommodation which has several characters such minimizing environmental impact on natural and cultural, applying sustainable design construction as well as landscaping and gardening, using green technologies, involving local people, and integrating environmental and cultural education for visitors. However, few examples of ecolodge practice and experience have become the significant weakness for planning and development. In this study, therefore, a study about ecolodge is done in East Java with the objective is providing information for policy marker, community, stakeholders and developers to contribute to sustainable development. We examine recent status of ecolodge in East Java, Indonesia. This study shows opportunities for ecolodge to facilitate economic growth, nature conservation and socio-cultural preservation of this region to become the potential tool in achieving sustainable development. While the objective of ecolodge to deliver ecotourism objectives to be successfully implemented, scenarios for environmental certification should be implemented to ensure the sustainability of ecolodge to meet environmentally sound accommodation.
