Significance of movement to adapt to pasture production and avoid pasture degradation in Mongolian pastoral nomadism

Pastoral nomadism is one of livestock farming. Livestock farming has both settled and moved types like agriculture. The pastoral nomadism is characterized by movement. Livestock production in the pastoral nomadism depends on pasture production. The pasture production correlates with precipitation and fluctuates corresponding to precipitation fluctuation. Due to this fluctuation, the pastoral nomadism must move to grow livestock constantly. Overgrazing by livestock degrades pasture and lowers pasture production. It is difficult for once-degraded pasture to recover because of soil alkalization. Continuous or repeated overgrazing by livestock promotes pasture degradation. It is movement to avoid continuous or repeated overgrazing by livestock. These are two reasons why movement is significant for the pastoral nomadism. We discuss the significance in the pastoral nomadism from the standpoints of sustainable and productive pasture use based on concrete examples.
