Death note of Collembola on field mushrooms

*Nakamori, T. (Yokohama Natl. Univ.), Oritani, M. (Yokohama Natl. Univ.), Kaneko, N. (Yokohama Natl. Univ.)

Host records of fungivores are fundamental for understanding the coevolutionary relationships of fungi and fungivores; however, such studies fail to detect the successful defence of fungi when potential fungivorous predators are not found or are found rarely on the host. In the field, dead fungivorous Collembola are sometimes found on the fruiting bodies of certain fungi. This may constitute direct evidence of successful defence of the fungi. Nevertheless, such field observations are generally lacking. Dead Collembola have been reported on Russula bella and Strobilurus ohshimae. In this study, dead Collembola were newly recorded from Amanita spp. and Hygrophoraceae spp. Dead Collembola were found on the sticky surface of the cup and on the edge of the gills on Amanita spp., and dead Collembola were found on the side of the gills on Hygrophoraceae spp. Although the cause of death is unknown, these fungal species may have defence systems on the part of the mushroom where the dead Collembola were found.
