Food habits of Intermediate Egret in Takashima city, Shiga Prefecture, Japan

Mei Hua LI.(kyoto Univ.) et al.

The food of the Intermediate Egret, Ardea intermedia was studied during breeding seasons in July 2011, in Takashima city, Shiga prefecture. as the development of modernization of agriculture and the lost of wetlands and nestingareas in Japan, the numbers of herons has been decreasing since 1960s. Although Intermediate Egret is one of the Near threatened species in Japan, there are only a few studies about the food habits of Intermediate Egret. This survey was carried out before the noon when the parent birds fly back to the nest for feeding. We set plastic sheet(180*180cm)below the nests of Intermediate Egret and identified the food falling down into the sheet. We observed once a day and found that Intermediate Egret ate a wide range of almost 34species of animals, which mainly are fish(loach),frogs, Orthoptera (Mole cricket), Odonata, and Beetle (Predaceous diving beetle, Palpicornia). Predaceous diving beetle, and Palpicornia were first found to be the food of the Intermediate Egret.
