Dynamics of Land Use and Land Cover toward Sustainability of Humid Tropical Watersheds in Indonesia

FIRDAUS Rachmad, Hiroshima Univ

Land use and land cover (LULC) change is increasingly considered as an important component of sustainability research. Batang Merao watershed, a representative of land change in humid tropic, was set up. This research aimed to assess LULC change toward sustainability in a humid tropical watershed in Indonesia. LULC change was analysis by using the application of RS and GIS technologies. Ecological impacts of LULC change were analyzed by USLE method for land degradation and WPI and STORET methods for water quality. HELP indicators was applied for assessing watershed sustainability. The research revealed that LULC change was associated with human activities. It also contributes to an understanding of ecological impacts of LULC change that the watershed was under environmental degradation. Finally, it was found that Batang Merao watershed was at an intermediate level of sustainability (score 0.59). It was in high pressure due to its pressure parameter which was higher than the state and the response parameters. It means that this watershed needs a kind of improvement or management to reach the better level of sustainability. Finally, this research is a kind of pioneer in successfully assessing the sustainability in Batang Merao Wateshed, Indonesia.
