Vegetation shifts in the Pacific regions of North-Eastern Asia

Organizer: Yukito Nakamura (Tokyo University of Agriculture)

Vegetation of Japanese Archipelago is clearly-defined through the comparative study with nearby North-Eastern continent Asia. The Archipelago is characterized by warm temperate evergreen broad-leaved forests and cool temperate summergreen broad-leaved forests which are determined by the warm indices under the temperate oceanic climate. However there is not only climatic climax vegetation like beech forest but also oak forests which are native in Central Honshu and Hokkaido and have syntaxonomic affinity with the Continent. In addition isolated conifer forests such as Picea koyamae, P. maximowiczii, Pinus koraiensis on the upper montane belt in Central Honshu is similar to Picea koraiensis- and Pinus koraiensis forests of the pan-mixed forest in the Continent. Present distribution of North-East Asian natural vegetation is clarified almost with climatic condition. More over to understand genetic analyses, species combination and geographic events in details bring out the historical background of Japanese natural forests. Our collaborative researches with Russia present the macroecological topics.
