This study examined inter-/intra-annual variation in community structure of a waterfowl assemblage at the Shinjiko Green Park located on the north-western shore of the Shinjiko lake, one of the Ramsar-designated wetland sites.

Censusing of birds has been conducted monthly (or less) intervals since 1996, covering different types of habitat such as paddy fields, artificial wetland/lakeshore, pond, a small woodland.

While there was little inter-annual variation in the number of species and the total number of individuals observed of all waterfowl species, both of these values showed conspicuous seasonal fluctuations, according to our time series analysis. The results show greater species richness and total number of waterfowl in mid autumn to early spring compared with the late spring to summer season. Our data confirm that the Shinjiko lake represents one of the important habitats for waterfowl in the Far East.
