Serpentinite is distributed fragmentary in northern Japan. Picea glehnii is nevertheless distributed widely on serpentine regions in northern Japan. We conducted a planting experiment of P. glehnii for three years, and its seedlings were planted on serpentine and non-serpentine soils. The total dry mass of P. glehnii planted on serpentine soil was almost the same as on non-serpentine soil. When we planted seedlings of P. glehnii on serpentine soil, percentage of ectomycorrhizal fungi showed high value, and uptake of Ni was suppressed.
We also identified the species of ectomycorrhizal fungi from different age of P. glehnii. On the species of ectomycorrhizal fungi, Tuber sp. was dominated for each age of P. glehnii. Symbiosis with genus Tuber may have an important role for P. glehnii to regenerate on serpentine soil.
