Ecological Stability: Spatial and Temporal Dynamics

Yuka Suzuki(Biodiversity & Biocomplexity Unit, Okinawa Institute of Science & Technology Graduate University), Samuel Robert Peter-James Ross(School of Natural Sciences, Trinity College Dublin)

Ecological stability is a multidimensional concept which aims to quantify how ecosystems respond to and recover from disturbance. Ecological properties, processes and biodiversity patterns vary in time and space. The dynamics and stability of biodiversity and emergent properties of ecosystems are largely a result of the spatial and temporal scale considered. This symposium aims to link ecological stability with spatial and temporal dynamics through a variety of theoretical, observational and experimental work. Specifically, we will focus on themes including spatiotemporal biodiversity patterns under global change, spatial structuring of metapopulation and metacommunity networks, and theoretical approaches to studying ecological stability among others. Together, this symposium aims to encourage discussion surrounding the impact of spatial and temporal scale on ecological dynamics and stability across systems.
