From 2006, so many metapopulations of Primula sieboldii have been found around halfway up Mt. Haruna, Gunma Pref. The survey in 2019 revealed that some other large metapopulations have been also maintained in the artificial forests (Cryptomeria, Quercus)  at the north face of the mountain.  This area might be large grassland till the end of the World War II, and after that, plantation was set over.  Seed germination experiments showed that over 90% of the mature seeds can potentially germinate, but at most 50% may germinate in the field after 2 times’ winter stratification, and no germination after 2-years’ storage at 4C.   Growth experiments reveled that the seedlings can grow (but slow) at over 9% RPPFD and over 10/6C, but cannot at 3% RPPFD.  Thus, this plant may not have permanent soil seed bank,  the seedlings may grow slowly under grassland and Qurecus forests and might not grow under Cryptomeria.  The many large metapopulations may survive over 70 years as “rhizome bank”.
