Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) is a leguminous invasive tree in Japan with a high ability to sprout after the cut. The sprouting mechanisms have not yet fully explained in terms of carbon and water status. We cut 90 trees of Black locust in the riverside of Akagawa river, Yamagata prefecture in May 2019 with the range of height 1-4m and DBH 0.7-4cm. We cut the trees on basal diameter/short stump (SS) and DBH/long stump (LS) to observe the sprouting mechanisms depend on different amount of carbon stock in the stump, through analysis of carbon stock usage (respiration rate), embolism and cell capacity to retain water (leaf water potential). We observed that LS trees produced more branches and leaves than SS trees. We found that the leaf respiration rate is high in SS because of the high demand for re-input carbon as soon as possible. The embolism was lower in SS because water stress during summer showed less affection. The free water available is large in SS by showing lower pressure in the leaf. The significant differences in the results of carbon and water dynamics in both treatments do not against successful sprouts, even though SS trees contain less carbon stock after the cut.
