Visualization of trophallaxis by RI imaging

*Seiji HIGASHINO(Kagoshima Univ.)

Trophallaxis in ants is not only a simple sharing of food but also plays the role of communication by transmitting pheromone and other chemicals. The received food may bear useful information for regulating ant colony's social behavior. To investigate food born information via trophallaxis, we determined the quantity of food received by ant colony brought back by a single ant that was fed radio-labeled food in a separated feeding area. Results showed that at least 15 ants received food within 5 minutes and the food was distributed to at least 80 ants within 180 minutes. Surprisingly, some ants received only 1/3000 of food that was brought by the first ant. In some cases, foragers tended to receive more food than nurse workers when the colony was starved. This may be reasonable because when colony is starved, foragers need to collect more food and should work harder for the colony. Also, we need to investigate the adaptive significance and function of the micro-amount trophallaxis.
