シンポジウム S03 3月17日 9:00-12:00 Room C
In lowland dipterocarp forests in Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo, many species set flower and then bear fruit simultaneously at multi-year, unpredictable intervals, which is called as general flowering and mast fruiting. In this symposium, we discuss how the synchronization of the reproduction of trees is triggered and also how it affects the abundance and feeding strategy of animals utilizing flowers and fruits as food resources. First, we discuss proximate causes that trigger flowering and its taxonomic variations (Satake, Chen). Then, we introduce numerical and functional responses by insects (Asano) and mammals (Hanya, Granados, Matsuda). After having comments by Drs. Tetsuro Hosaka (Hiroshima University) and Takakazu Yumoto (Kyoto University), we will have a general discussion with the audience and speakers.
