Bird courtship displays are a well-known example of complex signaling behavior, but less attention has been paid to the role of multimodal signals. Blue-capped cordon-bleus are a socially monogamous songbird, and both males and females perform 'tap dance'-like displays with singing. They hop with their heads pointed upwards and stamp their feet several times so rapidly that it is invisible to the naked eye. I previously found that the dance displays played a vital role in promoting signal receivers' responses against songs. More interestingly, the tap dance-like displays seemed to produce vibrations via perch. To understand the role of vibrations in their courtship communication, I examined if their behaviors during courtship vary depending on the availability of vibrations. I placed male and female cordon-bleus in adjoining aviaries and observed how their courtship displays and responses varied when the perches were connected or disconnected between the two aviaries (i.e., vibrations are available or unavailable). While the duration of courtship displays was not affected by vibration availability, signal receivers stayed on the same perch with display performers more frequently when vibrations were available. It suggests vibrations serve as a signal in cordon-bleu courtship communication depending on the environmental conditions.
