Understanding the drivers of ecological stability is essential to the consistent delivery of the services nature provides and the sustainable development of human societies. To achieve generality in ecology and to understand the biotic drivers of ecological stability, portfolio effects, and asynchronous dynamics, concerted effort by diverse researchers working across spatial, temporal, and ecological scales, and in different ecosystems and with different organisms is urgently needed. As a first step toward achieving this goal, we recently established the Response Diversity Network, which will serve as a connection point for researchers around the world interested in the biotic drivers of ecological stability. Here, I will introduce the concept of response diversity, discuss the need for coordinated and global science, and explain some of our recent and ongoing work on response diversity and stability. I end by discussing the near- and longer-term goals of our newly formed network and invite anyone interested in response diversity and the drivers of ecological stability to reach out and get involved in the Network.
