Operationalization of Essential Biodiversity Variables for harmonized biodiversity monitoring – perspectives from Finland and Europe【E】【O】

*Petteri VIHERVAARA(Finnish Environment Institute)

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) highlights the importance of monitoring and reporting the status of biodiversity, and the use of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) has been endorsed by GEO BON to support harmonized biodiversity monitoring across the scales. There is an increasing demand for the accurate biodiversity data in the society including private sector, but the data is difficult to access, scattered in space and time, and hosted by numerous institutes and networks. A major challenges of European biodiversity monitoring landscape are lack of coordination and data interoperability.

In this talk, an overview of current biodiversity monitoring activities across Europe will be presented. During recent years the two key initiatives, EuropaBON and Biodiversa+ have been developing harmonization of transnational biodiversity monitoring schemes. Finland is presented as an example of national scale activities. The operationalization of EBVs is becoming a central part of harmonization of biodiversity monitoring and integrating them to environmental policies. Finland has been one of the forerunners in Europe to develop EBV framework which integrates Earth observation and in-situ data for modelled products. The Finnish Ecosystem Observatory will provide a national cooperation model and improve data management that is a prerequisite for EBV workflows.
