Urban forest communities are under various pressures of urbanization, such as habitat fragmentation, homogenization of surrounding landscapes, and introduction of species from urban land uses. Along the urban gradient, such effects would i) be stronger towards the urban center, and ii) occur earlier in urban centers due to earlier development history. In this study, we investigated vegetation change of evergreen broadleaf forests along the urban gradient in the Tokyo metropolitan area using about 100 vegetation samples taken in the 1970s and 2000s. Urban gradient was analyzed using land use data since the 1970s.
