We evaluated how estimate the ecological city parks in Tokyo to use the measurement of natural ecosystems. We conducted a field study in 20 city parks and green areas within Tokyo, and divided three categories: (1) Parks are prioritized in the “Tokyo Metropolitan Planning Guideline for Parks and Green Spaces” as forest landscape considering to be closed nature, (2) green areas on private land have received awards for biodiversity, and (3) green areas are recognized as climax forest in the “Vegetation of Japan: Kanto, 1986” and “Vegetation of Tokyo, 1987.”
Natural ecosystems are able to regenerate after disasters. The plant community follows the succession of the community circle. To analyze different stages of succession at each site, we divided each study site into three landscape categories: grassland, shrubs and forest areas. We visualized the ecological evaluation using the radar diagram.
This method gives us a tool to measure the quality of a park’s flora. A high score on the corresponding radar diagram means that the area features a high number of species that are found in such areas in nature. Two landcapes that both look green to the untrained eye can have very different scores when studied for biodiversity.
