IALE-Japan was established in 1991 to catch up with the advanced level of western scientific development in landscape ecology. The society needed an English journal. Seeking the advancement of environmental conservation and restoration particularly for Eastern Asia, publication of the English journal Landscape and Ecological Engineering was started in 2005 by an International consisting of the Ecology and Civil Engineering Society, Japan Association for Landscape Ecology (ex-IALE-Japan) and Japanese Society of Revegetation Technology, Korea Institute of Landscape Architecture, Korea Society for Environmental Restoration and Revegetation Technology, Korean Society of Environmental Ecology, and Chinese Landscape Architects Society in Taiwan. Nine volumes of the journal have been published till 2013. Papers in those journals presented various directions in applied ecology for Asia, and provided with a good chance for the author to review the trend and their interests. Subjects, methods, spatial and temporal scale, area, and country were the key issues for reviewing. This review will serve as an introductory chapter of this symposium. International discussion on landscape ecology will follow after presenting East Asian trends to four invited speakers and audience.
