We investigated arrangements of leaf lateral veins along central veins of five temperate deciduous tree species, all of which have reticulate leaf venation, to examine whether those venation resembles alternate or opposite leaf orders. Basically, the primary lateral veins were arranged as the same manner as the alternate leaf order; lateral veins were usually arranged left- and right-half of the lamina alternately. However, we found two irregularities. Firstly, couples of lateral veins often arranged as the same manner as the opposite leaf order. Secondly, two lateral veins in sequence were often arranged in the same direction. The numbers of primary veins on the left- and right- side of leaf lamina were similar among those species. This phenomenon was observed not only for the leaves that have symmetric lamina, but also those who have asymmetric lamina.
