In Indonesia, there is an urgent need for the sustainable forest management. TPTI and TPTJ are the logging systems composed by selective logging and different planting methods of fast growing dipterocarps. In this study, we compared the decadal dynamics and assessed the efficiency of the two systems.
Study sites were logged over forest operated by TPTI and TPTJ in 1994 and 2000, respectively. The treatments were weeding and planting of seedlings. In TPTI site, seedlings were planted in low density. In TPTJ site, 80 seedlings/ha were planted in clear cut strips. The dynamics were measured in the plots set after the operation. Three 1 ha plots were set up in each treatment and control conditions. The recruitment to pole size (more than 10 cm DBH) and the growth were measured for 10 years.
Whole forest growth was in increasing tendency in TPTJ site. By contrast, the growth was retarded in TPTI site. About the regeneration of dipterocarps, planted seedlings contributed to the recruitment and growth tremendously in TPTJ system. Natural regeneration of dipterocarps in control plots was very poor. Therefore, for sustainable forest management, it is necessary to mediate the regeneration of dipterocarps, and the TPTJ system was efficient for the sustainability.
