生物群集における多様性の成り立ちとその機能を同時に理解することは、近年の人為活動による多様性変化が生態系機能の変化を引き起こすメカニズムを理解するために必須である。しかしながら、多様性の成り立ちに関する研究と多様性の機能に関する研究は多くの場合別々に行われてきた。本シンポジウムでは、William K. Cornwell 博士(The University of New South Wales, Australia)に加え、若手研究者2名、深谷肇一博士（国立環境研究所）、藤井佐織博士（森林総合研究所）をお招きし、多様性の成り立ちと機能に関する話題提供をして頂き、多様性の成り立ちから生態系機能へどう繋げるか、さまざまなスケールを対象に議論を行いたい。Cornwell博士は、植物の機能形質を用いた群集生態学や多様性創出機構の研究に加え、落葉分解速度など生態系生態学への応用研究も盛んに行っている。深谷肇一博士は、個体数推定や個体群動態・群集動態過程の推測に関する統計生態学的研究を行ってきた。藤井佐織博士は、土壌生態学を専門とし、土壌動物群集の多様性と生態系機能に関する研究から生物群集と物質循環プロセスの統合について模索してきた。今回、Cornwell博士には局所的機能的多様性の成り立ちについて、深谷博士には広域での種個体数分布推定について、藤井博士には多様性と生態系機能の関係について、それぞれ話題を提供して頂く。なお、講演は全て英語で行う。

It is essential to understand structure and function of biodiversity simultaneously for future predictions of changes in ecosystem function in response to human-induced changes in biodiversity. Many previous studies have focused on those two topics separately. In this symposium, we have three invited talks about the structure and function of biodiversity by Dr. William K. Cornwell (The University of New South Wales, Australia), Dr. Keiichi Fukaya (National Institute for Environmental Studies, Japan), and Dr. Saori Fujii (Forestry and Forest Product Research Institute, Japan) and we will discuss how to connect the two topics at various scales in ecosystems. All of three speakers are field ecologists with different expertise (Dr. Cornwell: community assembly and/or ecosystem functions such as litter decomposition. Dr. Fukaya: statistical ecology to estimate distribution and dynamics of population or community. Dr. Fujii: the interaction between community of soil fauna and material cycling). We also invite audiences who want to share study topics related to biodiversity for a 5-minute lightning talk. This symposium will be held in English.
