Unraveling taxonomy and evolutionary dynamics of a remarkable ant radiation in Madagascar based on next-generation-sequencing and 3D cybertaxonomy

*Francisco HITA GARCIA, Evan P. ECONOMO(OIST)

Evolutionary radiations are some of the most intriguing phenomena in biology. However, the extent to which the observed patterns and processes apply to the diversity of species and phenotypes across the tree of life remains poorly understood. Due to its long isolation, geography, and unique biota, Madagascar is ideal to study the evolutionary processes of species diversification. To date, almost all studies are based on vertebrates and focus on abiotic factors driving diversification, such as geography and climate. Consequently, we know little about insect radiations and how biotic factors, such as competition or predation, influence diversification. In this project, I investigate the radiation of the ant genus Terataner in Madagascar and test which factors are responsible for its diversification. For this I document its taxonomic diversity, reconstruct its evolutionary history, and use a comprehensive dataset comprising distribution, climate, geography, ecology, and linear and 3D ecomorphological trait data based on x-ray microtomography.
