While existing studies demonstrated that nature experience and the human-nature relationship have profound effects in shaping relational values of nature, their findings are often inconsistent, requiring further examination. In this study, we hypothesized that people have events that shape their relational values. We have quantitatively analyzed 1) the effect of the most impactful event for their relational values towards the neighborhood and 2) what types of experiences affected using the empirically tested conceptual framework. 3,052 responses were collected through an online web survey in February 2021 in the Tohoku region, Japan. 45% of respondents had an experience or experiences. We randomly split responses for cross-validation for the structural equation modelling. Three factors were extracted with exploratory factor analysis and named appreciation for nature, altruism, and anthropocentric with sample1 (n = 1,509). Using the factor structure, structural equation modelling was conducted with sample 2 (n=1,543). People who have experiences tended to evaluate appreciation for nature and altruism higher and anthropocentric lower than those who don’t have experiences. In particular, direct and intended experiences were significantly positive on the appreciation for nature and altruism.
