*Sun-Kee Hong, Yoon-Seon Lee (Mokpo National Univ., Korea)

Maritime environment have diverse forested landscape element. As same as terrestrial ecosystem, forested landscapes in maritime and island had been influenced by human impact with nature disturbance. That productivity of forested landscape had been sustained human life in maritime and islands. Moreover, it has ecological function and religious perspectives. There are several types of landscape function in forest. Since the last decade, Cultural Properties Administration and Ministry of Environment of Korea had been surveyed in all islands and designate those forest types as natural monument. As well as ecological functions of terrestrial forest (such as windbreak, restoring land, Feng-shui), maritime and island forest have important characteristics for fishing point. Moreover, some forests have religious and cultural function in the island village people (like a 'Jinjunomori' or 'satoumi' in Japan). Therefore maritime forest had been act as holistic function for sustaining maritime culture, ecosystems and human society. However, in recent, that cultural landscape had fast fragmented in accordance with island development and land use change. In interdisciplinary research, we introduce status-quo of island landscape and its cultural-ecological functions in southwestern Korea.
