ABOUT US

The Ecological Society of Japan (ESJ) was established in 1953. A current membership of approximately 3900 meets annually. English journals published by ESJ include Ecological Research (1986~), Plant Species Biology (1986~, with the Society of Study of Species Biology), and Population Ecology (1952~, with the Society of Population Ecology).

ESJ MISSION

The Ecological Society of Japan, as a community of researchers in ecology and related fields, supports its members by disseminating research results among them and to society at large. We hereby adopt the following agenda to remain relevant and adaptive in a changing world.

Diversity and Inclusion: We recognize and respect diversity among people engaged in ecology, striving for an environment that is inclusive and fair regardless of differences.

Nurturing the Future Generations: We support students and young researchers in ecology, making efforts for the betterment of the research environment and career opportunities.

Internationalization: We promote international scholarly exchanges through academic meetings and the publication of disciplinary journals in English. We encourage exchanges with other academic societies and international organizations. In particular, we aim to serve as a hub for Asian ecologists.

Open Science: We work to ensure that more people can access ecological data and publications, working together to disseminate trustworthy research results.

Contribution to Society at Large: We actively make effort to spread ecological knowledge, and provide ecological perspectives to various societal problems. We also encourage collaboration between ecologists and practitioners.

Exchanges with Other Academic Disciplines: We foster advances in ecology and its outreach through interactions with other academic disciplines. At the same time, we promote appreciation of the role that ecological research can play in integrating knowledge.

ESJ DIVERSITY STATEMENT

Advances in scientific endeavors, including ecology, must reflect diverse perspectives among diverse people. In recognition of the importance of diversity in the field of ecology, the Ecological Society of Japan has adopted the following principles in its contribution toward building a more inclusive and fair society.

1. Respect for Diversity: We welcome diversity in gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, capacity, age, health condition, disability, religion, race, ethnicity, culture, nationality, place of birth, economic status, career paths, and academic perspective. We reject discrimination and harassment.

2. Equity: In recognition of disadvantages experienced by minorities in academic and professional opportunities, we strive to remove barriers and correct gender and other types of imbalances.

3. Inclusiveness: We promote an environment that allows anyone to participate in the society’s activities. In organizational structures and planning of academic meetings, we encourage participation by researchers from diverse backgrounds.

4. Promotion: We enhance key understandings surrounding diversity, such as the common tendency of unconscious bias in decision-making processes by individuals and organizations, and the essential values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We raise awareness through study groups, seminars, and workshops among our members and beyond.

Hereby, the Ecological Society of Japan declares that it honors diversity, equity, and inclusion as essential values, and will work towards their implementation.
